The Masters School - Dobbs Ferry, New York
Academics
Classes take place around oval Harkness tables, engaging every student in an interactive learning experience. Discussions require daily preparation, participation, and a respect for diverse viewpoints. Students from around the world debate, discuss and share their ideas in a cooperative environment. A wide range of required, elective, and advanced placement courses, give students the intellectual tools and verbal and study skills necessary to succeed in college and in life.
Athletics
The Masters School’s comprehensive and inclusive athletics program teaches lifelong lessons in teamwork, sportsmanship, and the importance of physical fitness. Interscholastic competition fosters cooperation and personal bonds among teammates.
Under the guidance of experienced coaches, our student-athletes grow in physical strength and skill, while they learn what it means to win with grace, concede defeat with honor, and come back with tenacity.
We have eleven team sports so students of all interests and abilities can participate in a variety of sports, taste the excitement of competition, and reach new peaks of athletic achievement. The spirited support of fellow students and faculty is fully felt at sports events.
Arts
Art is a common language that unites The Masters School community. Our outstanding faculty guide students in the use of artistic media to express their thoughts of the heart, mind, and imagination. We offer a range of courses and are committed to individual attention that provides a safe environment for beginners—and challenges experienced students to achieve their full potential.
Our students create, practice, display, perform, and find their voices as artists and prepare for a lifetime of appreciation and fulfillment. Our alumnae/i often pursue advanced arts studies in college, and many have become accomplished professional dancers, musicians, actors, and visual artists.
Unique Programs or Strengths of School
Diverse and Global Culture
Students come to The Masters School from 18 countries and 15 states. Several American students have returned from an expatriate life abroad as well. They bring tremendous insights to the school community, along with a remarkable friendliness. With the support of their peers, students feel comfortable stretching their limits, stepping into new roles and realizing their full and unique potential.
With students from different countries and different locations in the US at the Harkness table, a lively discussion, with several points of view, can be heard.
New York City Inside and Outside the Classroom
While not a specific program, students enjoy visiting New York City – and all it has to offer - for classes and leisure. A Spanish class visits a museum exhibit of a Spanish artist, the world religions class visits the places of worship related to the philosophies the students have explored, or the 9th grade class visits various government offices in NYC as the students explore their “cityproject” – a study of NYC’s infrastructure.
Pick your Passions
A broad and flexible co-curricular program enables students to develop their talents in many areas of interest, from ballet to sculpture, from athletics to film-making.
