Academics
Stevenson School, a selective school for college-bound boarding and day students, commits to three aims: to prepare students for success in college and beyond; to foster their passion for learning and achievement; and to help them shape a joyful life. Classes at Stevenson are challenging, and the curriculum is designed for motivated students who are ready for that challenge. Students receive the very best education while being surrounded with like minded classmates and engaging, passionate teachers. A broad curriculum offers unique classes that will kindle a life long passion; 20 Advanced Placement (AP) courses push even the strongest student.
Athletics
Stevenson offers one of the broadest athletic programs among secondary schools in the country. Our 24 interscholastic teams compete in basketball, baseball, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, lacrosse, sailing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track, volleyball and water polo at the varsity and junior varsity levels. In addition to interscholastic teams, a wide range of intramural and recreational activities such as kayaking, fencing, and rock climbing are available.
Arts
Stevenson feels that a brilliant mind needs creative inspiration. Endless opportunities for growth and expression can be found in painting, photography, pottery, sculpture; tap, ballet, and ballroom dance; bell choir, ensemble jazz, chorus, chamber singers, orchestra, and private lessons; and several theater productions each year. In addition, there are several chances for students to express their writing talents including Tusitala, our student newspaper, Vailima, the literary magazine, or Spyglass, the yearbook.
Unique Programs or Strengths of School
KSPB 91.9 FM
At 1000 Watts, KSPB 91.9 FM is one of the most powerful high school radio stations in the world. KSPB is the largest high school radio station west of the Mississippi River, and offers innovative student programming intertwined with the BBC. As part of the Beginning Radio course, students practice the fundamentals of radio broadcasting, including presentation of music, public service, news, sports programming, and basic radio engineering. Once students complete the Advanced Radio Broadcasting course, which includes hosting a two-hour radio show per week, they are competent in the fundamentals of radio broadcasting and have considerable knowledge of broadcast equipment and radio law.
Sophomore Wilderness Expedition
Wild weather including snow and high waters are not uncommon during the Sophomore Wilderness Expedition, and the students and staff that participate definitely have their work cut out for them. But not to worry, the staff and co-leaders are prepared for anything. The expedition is always a wonderful opportunity for class bonding time, a lot of laughs and forming new friendships. The Wilderness Expedition introduces students to an exciting and rugged wilderness environment through outdoor activities while emphasizing the development of a positive attitude toward challenging situations. This is accomplished while simultaneously teaching specific outdoor skills to meet the physical demands made by the environment. The Sophomore Wilderness Expedition is not a mandatory program, though about half of our sophomores participate every year. The program takes place over 11 days of spring break in late February/early March, with preparations and training beginning during the fall school term.
