Unique Programs or Strengths of School

Creating a Student-Centered Learning Environment

Creating A Student-Centered Learning Environment (CASCLE) is the unique core of our educational philosophy. In classrooms, students are actively involved in a hands-on learning process, not just passively listening to a teacher. West Nottingham Academy seeks to inspire curiosity, independence, critical thinking, and a passion for learning. The students are taught to think and write, not simply memorize. They are encouraged to acquire the proper academic learning habits and skills so they may confidently and successfully pursue higher education. It is acceptable to make a mistake at the Academy; it teaches the teachers how students learn.

Chesapeake Learning Center

It is understood that all students learn differently and that some students may need more structured and sensitive academic support. The CLC college preparatory program is designed for students with diagnosed learning differences. Students in this program are encouraged to know that he or she can have a successful academic experience, as the program will address individual's needs while fostering a desire to explore and learn. Smaller classes and tutorials help each student to discover his or her unique abilities and to grow academic self-confidence and skills. Each CLC teacher develops and implements an individual plan for student growth which is shared with the student so they are aware of the support, technique and care that is available to them.

Residential Activities

Residential Life is an important part of the school program. School community supports students as they meet new people from a varied array of cultures and geographies. There are numerous activities and opportunities on weekend calendars and students are encouraged to try out things that they may not be particularly good at. The safe and supportive campus is great place to make life-long friends with both students and faculty. Over 65% of a student's time is spent outside the classroom; the residential programs focus on student's overall development as a caring, responsible, and independent person.
