International Baccalaureate Programs
Founded in 1968, the International Baccalaureate Organization’s (IBO) Diploma Programme is a challenging two-year curriculum, primarily aimed at students in Grades 11 and 12. The International Baccalaureate Diploma programme offers challenges beyond the traditional high school curriculum. It is a well-rounded programme designed to prepare students thoroughly for the rigorous demands of university. Students in this programme are encouraged to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and engaged world citizens. Students who successfully complete the Diploma Programme will be eligible to gain admission into the world’s leading universities.
To achieve the IB Diploma students are required to take one subject from each of the six subject groups: Language A (native language); Language B (a second language); Individuals and Societies; Experimental Sciences; Mathematics; and the Arts. In addition, students must successfully complete a Theory of Knowledge course (TOK); write a 4000 word independent research paper; and complete 150 hours of Creativity, Action and Service (CAS). Three of the six subjects must be taken at the higher level (HL); the remaining subjects are taken at the Standard Level (SL). Individual students select which three courses they will take at the Higher Level thus ensuring that they are taking courses that suit their individual strengths.
Each course is awarded a grade of 1 (minimum) to a 7 (maximum) by external examiners. The IB Diploma is awarded to students whose total score reaches or exceeds 24 points and does not contain any failing or excluding conditions. Each year about 75% of the world’s Diploma candidates achieve the IB Diploma.
