Special Needs Programs

The student who is not do well in the traditional public or private schools can find success in a so-called “special needs” boarding school. The goal of these schools is to provide the student with the environment needed to transition back to a regular school after as little as one semester or one year, or, apply for and enter university.

Self-contained and departmentalized classes, small group and individualized instruction, emphasis on living and social skills, and a value-based community guide children on a path of personal accomplishment and growth.

How do you know if a child is right for this program? If you answer to Yes to one or more of the questions below, a special-needs school may be the solution.

Has your child had difficulty in main-stream schools?
Do you sometimes think that your child has not yet learned how to learn?
Does your child have trouble focusing on a single subject?
Does your child have high anxiety about school, friends, sports, family?
Has your child been diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress, Tourette's Syndrome, Asperger's Syndrome, or any other learning disabilities?
Does your child experience anxiety or mood disorders?

Two Consortium schools provide the environment for special-needs children to move beyond their own personal obstacle into the real world.

The Glenholme School is a family choice boarding school for children with special needs. Children ages 10 to 18, at admission, who need a highly structured learning environment can prosper in this safe, nurturing school. It provides a value-based program to show students the way to academic success. Academic and social difficulties relative to Asperger's, PDD, ADD, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Depression, OCD, Tourettes Syndrome, or other learning disabilities are addressed within our highly structured program, and behavioral problems can be addressed simultaneously in a place where the emphasis is on the "whole" child.

West Nottingham School knows that all students learn differently and some may need more structured and sensitive support. The Chesapeake Learning Center college preparatory program is designed for students with diagnosed learning differences. We want a student in this program to know that he or she can have a successful academic experience, and we will address this individual’s needs while fostering a desire to explore and learn. Smaller classes and tutorials help each student discover his or her unique abilities and develop self-confidence and skills.
